For our first-ever pilot project, RLE reached out to Amit Gautham, founder of the Savitribai Phule Village Library, and a dedicated local volunteer in the village of Sarwagauhan, Uttar Pradesh. Recognizing the urgent need for educational resources, RLE provided crucial support to the SP Village Library by securing FCRA approval for them to become a registered grassroots NGO.
Additionally, RLE fundraised alongside Dalit Solidarity to establish dependable WiFi and network access, supplied curriculum textbook hard copies for every grade and skill level, provided test preparatory workbooks, and introduced a diverse selection of literature. This collaboration aligns perfectly with our mission to foster a love for reading and promote literacy among marginalized communities.
The Savitribai Phule Village Library, founded by Amit in April 2019, has been a beacon of hope for Dalit children in the village. Initially serving just 10 students, the library has expanded to support almost 200 children, offering free after-school coaching. Amit's own journey, from facing educational barriers, becoming the first high school graduate from his village, to earning a Master's degree in Rural Technology & Development, has fueled his passion for empowering his community through education. His work with the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India, further strengthened his resolve to uplift marginalized groups. Amit aptly says, "Education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty and discrimination, and we are here to unlock that door for every child in our community."
